From: 2016.02.11 To: 2016.02.22
The beautiful Catalonian Mediterranean town of Vilanova i La Geltru celebrates one of the most emblematic and famous carnivals in the region. Having disobeyed the former Spanish dictator Franco’s prohibition, the carnival has constantly cherished Catalonian traditions exemplified through the various lively and bizarre traditions year after year. The deep-rooted traditional festival brings you funny public battles involving culinary elements such as meringues coated under a special crust, whilst "sweet wars" occur such as the Battle of the Caramellos. Additionally, the local Spanish religious tradition of burying sardines represents one of the peaks of this event as it marks the beginning of Lent for Catholics. Masked street processions and various special Catalonian dances are performed, enchanting the crowds that arrive from all over Europe.
