Sport, music and fun on the banks of the canal bring together visitors from both sides of the water for over a week of enjoyment. Like a huge bridge, Canal Fest cuts across the Erie Canal and connects Tonawanda with North Tonawanda, creating a great festival zone that annually attracts more than two hundred thousand people. The Canal Fest offers something for everyone, from the chalk drawing competition and “the duck race”, to the parade and “car cruise”. The music addicts will also be satisfied by the colorful line-up that previously included artists like Black Widow, West of the Mark, Breckenwood, Widowmaker and the Rod Nickson Project. Although the festival is “just” a few decades old, the whole story goes back to 1825 when the important Erie Canal was completed. Probably engineers of that time didn’t have in mind that, more than a century later, this canal would inspire this huge, colorful and wonderful festival.
