Bulls to the Sea
From: 2013.08.31 To: 2013.09.09
Can bulls swim? You'll find out at the annual Bulls to the Sea event hend in Xabia on Spain's Costa Blanca. A strip of sandy beach is fenced off, the bull arrives, and the matadors (Spanish youth) do whatever they can to trick the bull into chasing them into the water. Bulls are smarter than you'd expect so it is actually quite a difficult feat. The spectacle takes place the last week of August and first week of September and is part of the Lady of Loreto festivities happening in villages across Valencia. Many locals who have seen it all before prefer to place themselves at the large temporary bar area which is set up next to the bull run area and spend the week drinking beer and eating freshly cooked sardines. Definitely the more interesting option. Other events during Javea's festivals include a chess championship, a basketball tournament, a table tennis competition and various tournaments of typical local sports. There is something for everyone including a special children's days with a parade, games and free drinks and ice-cream for all the children. Bring grandpa and grandma to senior citizen's day which involves a lot of music and dancing and free sangria. Some evenings host large neighborhood dinners where everybody brings their own food and enjoys the company of friends.
