Budapest International Wine Festival
From: 2014.09.12 To: 2014.09.16
The elegant Buda Castle on the western bank of the Danube hosts a fantastic weekend of wine and culture. Sample 1,000 wines while enjoying the hilltop views of this "Pearl of the Danube" capital. Make a special effort to get your lips on some of the wines from the Tokaj region, a flavorful vintage that somehow remains relatively unknown outside of Hungary. Aside from imbibing, the wine festival offers exhibitions, lectures and workshops about local wines. The best day to be there is on Saturday, when a Vintage Parade brings together all of the wine experts from the region, for an actual "vintage" costume parade around the charming castle district. The parade ends with a lively folk dancing show. We also recommend taking the Wine Boat up the river to the artist colony of Szentendre where a sister venue at the Hungarian Open Air Museum offers similar wines in a new setting. While Buda boasts extraordinary views you shouldn't leave the city without heading across the river to Pest for its vibrant nightlife and trendy restaurants.
