Every summer, the 1850s gold rush boomtown Jacksonville tunes up for The Britt Festivals, a pine-shaded, under-the-stars celebration of music and the performing arts, held on the grassy hillside estate of 19th-century photographer Peter Britt. Conceived by conductor John Trudeau and his friend Sam McKinney back in 1963, the festival offers concerts delivered by world-renowned artists in classical, jazz, blues, folk, pop and country music. Past performers have included the likes of B. B. King, Herbie Hancock, Sheryl Crow, Billy Idol, Josh Turner and Mark Knopfler. Most concerts are staged in a natural amphitheater offering excellent acoustics and great views – bring a blanket and picnic on the lawn!
