Bohinj Cows' Ball
From: 2014.09.16 To: 2014.09.16
Most on route to Lake Bled in Slovenia only give a short pause for the beauty of Bohinj, but during the annual Cow Ball, it's worth staying awhile. This is tradition is when local farmers proudly decorate their fattened cattle with wreathes and bells and walk them around the town's famous waterfall in a "cow parade." Afterwards, all involved in the dairy industry toast to healthy cattle by selling cheeses and other homespun specialties. There are also contests that test stamina and entertain, such as horseshoe casting and log sawing. Meanwhile, the actual "Cow Ball" is indeed a big shebang, but not in the highbrow Viennese sense, this dancing event keeps to an old-fashioned formula: locals kick up their heels to the swinging sounds of fiddles and accordions.
