A local addition to traditional Nepali New Year celebrations, Bisket Jatra is a kooky annual festival held in April in Bhaktapur. During the festival, two chariots (one for Bhairab, the other for Bhadrakali) are constructed, worshiped and hauled through the streets in a noisy procession. But Bisket Jatra is far from being a typical chariot parade. One of the signature events of the fiesta is a tug-of-war between the eastern and western parts of the town, with the rowdy revelers vigorously fighting each other for the decorated cars, which are thought to bring good fortune in the new year.
