No better way to see the majesty, history and architecture of this revitalized European city than by running through it. The Berlin Marathon has become one of the most popular on the world circuit and upwards of 35,000 athletes come together on the taxing 42km (26mile) route that snakes through the streets and hills of this city of 3.4 million. Runners will have a tour of the city's top sights, including the former Berlin Wall, Unter den Linden, the State Opera, the Castle Bridge, and many others before crossing through the finish line after the Brandenburg Gate. The “Volksmarathon” started in 1974, with the route in a field outside the city center attracting a grand total of 286 runners. Through the years the marathon built momentum, and re-routing runners through the city center gave it a boost in attendance in the 1980s. The "Reunification Run" of 1990, saw runners racing through both East and West Berlin in a powerful display of unity.
