Berlin Christmas Markets
From: 2013.11.26 To: 2013.12.31
Thousands of stalls and more than fifty actual markets make up part of Berlin's yuletide offering. The largest Christmas market overlooks the impressive Opera House, while nearby the grand Unter den Linden, also known as Berlin's leading shopping street, offers many commercial treats in addition to more traditional seasonal ornaments and sweets. The markets are the perfect compliment to Berlin's startling skyline and mix of old and new. For instance, Gedächtniskirche, a church built in the nineteenth century that has been ruined and rebuilt many times since, epitomizes a picturesque site with a lot of history. Children will love the fairytale-like exhibitions that recreate Christmas lands and stories in superhuman form. These are about as figuratively magical as you can get in the middle of a big, bustling city. Meanwhile, the merry-go-rounds and the ice-skating rink at the Alexanderplatz will likely thrill anyone who likes to move and isn't afraid of plastic horses or slick ice. The festive feeling is in the air, and heart shaped cookies and roasting almonds are in your mouth. It’s all part of the Berlin Christmas tradition.
