Every year from October to December, Kasanka National Park sees the planet’s possibly greatest mammal migration, the congregation of an astounding 8 million fruit bats. The straw-coloured flying foxes arrive from Congo, lured by the promise of a long, fruity feast. Witness the clouds of peckish fruit bats take to the skies at about 6 pm each day, flapping their large wings and darkening the twilight horizon. After filling their empty bellies, the furry creatures return to the forest to snooze the day away, hanging upside-down from branches in true bat style.
