In Lyon, it is the local fire brigade who is in charge of most events on Bastille Day, ranging from organizing balls to turning the main Gerleand fire station into a spectacular nightclub, where you can even enjoy a sandy beach for dancing barefoot all night long. Bastille Day is the French national holiday commemorating the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, a pivotal event the anti-monarchy revolution. Celebrations and fireworks can be enjoyed throughout the country in large towns and small villages. Often celebrations also take place before and after the main event on the 14th.
