In Avignon, expect a special French national day in the company of amazingly beautiful surroundings. The fireworks erupt on the quays of the Rhone river, so make sure you get an early seat on the well known bridge of Avignon for the best view! A traditional French folk show previews the fireworks, while in its aftermath you can dance away with the crowds in the big ball taking place just in front of the magnificent Palace of the Pope. Bastille Day is the French national holiday commemorating the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, a pivotal event the anti-monarchy revolution. Celebrations and fireworks can be enjoyed throughout the country in large towns and small villages. Often celebrations also take place before and after the main event on the 14th.
