Feathers, masks and flowers adorn dancers at this four day packed street party presided over by the Queen of the Carnival. Held 40 days before the Holy Week travelers from all over the world, as well as Columbian nationals come to experience the spectacle. Traditionally inspired music from Spain, Africa and the indigenous peoples create a fusion of sound and the party was declared a Cultural Masterpiece in 2001 by the Columbian government. UNESCO also named the event as one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2003. The festival includes events such as the Flower Battle, the Great Parade, Dances of the Congo and an Orchestra performance with Caribbean and Latin bands.
