Aymara New Year
From: 2013.06.21 To: 2013.06.22
High above La Paz on June 21st the Ayamara peoples (the indigenous people of Bolivia) celebrate the New Year and the start of the Winter solstice. The main festival occurs at the ancient and pre-Incan ruins of Tiahuanaco. This is also the longest and coldest night of the new year and huge bonfires are lit to stay warm. The aim is to wait for sunrise when first light strikes the Peurta de Sol (Gateway of the Sun). This is a highly spiritual event that may send chills down your spine (that is if the cold doesn't get there first). In modern times, however, the fireworks and drinking may also help to keep your spirits up!
