Athens & Epidaurus Festival
From: 2013.04.05 To: 2013.09.30
For more than 50 years, the Athens Festival has been the epicenter of summer culture, bringing the best of the arts -- music, theater, dance and drama -- to its various theaters, many of which are ancient monuments and sites. One such venue is the Lycabettus outdoor amphitheater atop Lycabettus Hill, a spectacular arena that hosts a variety of performances and rock concerts. But the star of the festival is the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, a venue so historic and breathtaking that major artists come from all over the world for the chance to perform, from Mitropoulos and Callas to Rostropovich, Pavarotti, Leonidas Kavakos and Dimitris Sgouros; from Theodorakis and Hadzidakis to Savopoulos, Protopsalti, Dalaras and Marinella; from Rontiris and Koun to Streller, Peter Hall, Theatre Noh, Bunraku and the Peking Opera; from Balanchine to Pina Bausch and from Nureyev and Fonteyn to Martha Graham and Alicia Alonso. There's something surreal about sitting on stone steps where for centuries others have sat and experienced similar entertainment.
