It all began in the Archbishop's courtyard, where horse-drawn carriages of old used to wind up after their trips. A group of men and women fueled by the enthusiasm and drive of inspired visionary and artistic director Gabriel Dussurget were to transform this courtyard into a temple of music, theatre and song as well as a leading festival venue. Since 1948, the Aix-En-Provence Festival has paid tribute to the human voice during a rich program of opera, orchestral, choral and chamber concerts. Professional opera is undoubtedly the main attraction (with a special affection for Mozart), but the festival also hosts costume workshops and the European Music Academy, a program highlighting young musical talent. Beyond the Archbishop's Courtyard venue you can find informal concerts held daily in the Théâtre de l'Archêveché and the Cathédrale Saint-Sauveur.
